4 Hikes to See Marin’s Wildflowers
Now that spring is officially here (took long enough!), and with help from all the recent rain, it's the perfect time to check out the wildflowers throughout Marin. Here are a few great hiking spots to see the flowers up close:
• Chimney Rock, Point Reyes: This dramatic landscape not only has spectacular wildflowers on display, but you might also be able to spot northern elephant seals and migrating whales heading north. Don't forget to bundle up!
• Ring Mountain Preserve, Corte Madera/Tiburon (down the street from me!): In addition to beautiful wildflowers at the higher portion of the preserve, there are also incredible bay views spanning both sides of the mountain.
• China Camp State Park, San Rafael: Many trails (with the Shoreline Trail being the most popular) and a rich history accompany the wildflowers in this easily-accessible park.
• Mount Tamalpais State Park, Mill Valley: Here you'll find a wide variety of wildflowers and plant species including our state flower, the California Poppy. Try the Bolinas Ridge trail for a challenging hike and breathtaking scenery.
Always remember to look, but not touch! (And the myth about it being a crime to pick a California Poppy is somewhat true, since it's illegal to pick *any* plant in a state or federal park.)
