Outdated Kitchen Island Trends

Dark kitchen island with wood countertops and pendant ligths

Kitchen islands are not only essential for adding precious countertop and storage space, but also lend a design element to an otherwise boring kitchen. Say goodbye to these top 5 trends that are on their way out, and make room for something fresh and new:

Oversized islands: While big islands can add drama and extra space, they can make a kitchen look cramped if too big. Picking a proportional size, along with lighter countertops, can make it feel more balanced.

Pendant lights: This trend can make houses look outdated, and is being replaced by one contemporary, linear light fixture that distributes the light more evenly.

Two-toned islands: When islands are painted two colors, it can appear busy or overwhelm the kitchen. Instead, paint the island one color. Which leads to the next trend...

Homogenous colors: Not only are all-white kitchens on their way out, but the same can also be applied to kitchen islands. Painting the island with a contrasting color (that still feels cohesive) will make the entire kitchen feel more updated.

Waterfall countertops: While this one is hard for me to swallow (I still swoon over Carrara marble waterfall islands), this trend is being replaced by more interesting features like open shelving or (my favorite) a nook with a water and food station for your pet.
